Update
Last month, our Volunteer Committee and Media & Outreach Committee encountered many successes. We expanded English 1 on 1 on two key fronts: reaching out to other organizations, and social media management. Read on to discover all that we accomplished!
First, we worked with another nonprofit organization in the greater Seattle area. We met with their team to discuss our mission and pass along our English-learning services to their beneficiaries. We hope that more individuals in Washington state will now have the ability to speak and learn 1 on 1 with our wonderful teachers.
English 1 on 1 set interaction records on Instagram and Youtube. Our YouTube content creators recently posted a video for House Vocabulary. Go and check it out! As for Instagram, we posted new content consistently and partnered with other organizations on the app to spread awareness about us. The shout-outs and posts from these organizations (Power the Youth, Teach Me, and Virtual Guru, to name a few) resulted in a flood of volunteers. In March, we interviewed and had orientations with seven new volunteers, most of them hoping to become teachers. This marks great progress as the more volunteers we have, the more effective our program becomes. Thank you so much, volunteers!
As for our goals for April, English 1 on 1 is looking for more volunteers in our Media & Outreach Committee and Finance Committee. Lesson Creators are also needed as we hope to finish our Advanced Lesson series. If you are between the ages of 12 and 18 and interested in any of these positions, please contact us at speakingenglish2019@gmail.com. Stay tuned for updates on our social media pages and future newsletters!
Volunteer Spotlight
This month’s English 1 on 1 volunteer shoutout goes to Eva! Since October, Eva has been working diligently as a teacher at E1O1. She currently has two students and has consistently been adding on lessons to benefit her student’s understanding of English. Her student appreciated her teaching so much, that she even reached out to the Board extending her thanks to Eva! Eva shows significant dedication towards E1O1 by always attending 1-on-1s, committee meetings, and overall being very active within the organization. She also provides valuable insight and feedback on what we can improve on as an organization in regard to enhanced communication and efficiency.
Teaching lessons is not the easiest task. Eva is able to add her insight on vocabulary or grammar lists to better her student’s comprehension. She prioritizes article analysis, pronunciation, and reading comprehension when teaching lessons to increase her student’s conversational skills. Eva’s report cards after administering tests are always exceedingly detailed and provide useful feedback with possible things her student could improve on. The Board greatly appreciates this to track students’ progress and knows that students appreciate it as well. We are so grateful to have such a hard-working volunteer as Eva on our team!
As English 1 on 1 continues to grow its volunteer and student base internationally through partnerships with nonprofits across the globe, we could not be more thankful for our volunteers’ work and support. Wrapping up the first quarter of 2021 and looking forward to the next one, we are more than excited to see what is in store for English 1 on 1!
Word of the Month
Vaccine
/vakˈsēn/
Noun
- a substance used to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against
one or several diseases, prepared from the causative agent of a disease, its products, or a
synthetic substitute, treated to act as an antigen without inducing the disease.
As many of you may know, COVID-19 vaccines are becoming more accessible to
the public by the day. Washington state residents who are 16 or older will be eligible for
the vaccine starting April 15th . State officials promised that those most vulnerable to the
diseases will be vaccinated first, and that vaccine allocations will continue to increase.
The end of the pandemic is near. It is always good to look back and see how much
we changed and grew from this experience, but it is even more important for us to look
ahead. Although we won’t completely return back to our normal lives in the near future,
we can get pretty close! What is one thing you will miss from this once-in-a-lifetime
experience, and what is one thing you look forward to doing once the pandemic is under
control?
